Sinatra and the Count Basie Orchestra made this album in 1962 with arrangements by Neal Hefti. Two years later they reunited for It Might as Well Be Swing, orchestrated by Quincy Jones, and Basie's band also backed Sinatra on Sinatra at the Sands. Sinatra performed the album's arrangement of Please Be Kind on The Dinah Shore Show on 9 December 1962. According to the pianist Bill Miller, Basie was not an expert reader of sheet music, so Basie asked Miller to play piano on Pennies from Heaven.
