Kansas was recorded in the Record Plant's A and C rooms in New York, produced by Wally Gold with Dan Turbeville engineering. Walsh played piano, organ, Fender Rhodes, congas and sang, Livgren played guitars, piano, organ and Moog, Steinhardt played violin and sang, and Jay Siegel of The Tokens sang on "Lonely Wind". The cover is a crop of John Steuart Curry's mural Tragic Prelude in the Kansas State Capitol. It has one cover, J.J. Cale's "Bringing It Back". "Journey from Mariabronn" draws on Hermann Hesse's Narcissus and Goldmund, and "Belexes" and "Apercu" on Puccini's Turandot.
It reached number 174 on the Billboard 200. The singles "Can I Tell You" (May 1974) and "Lonely Wind" (February 1975) did not chart, though a live "Lonely Wind" reached the Top 100 in early 1979. NME's Max Bell in 1975 found it lacking personality, while AllMusic gives it three and a half stars.
