Masque was the first Kansas album produced by Jeff Glixman alone, with Lee Peterzell engineering, at Studio in the Country in Bogalusa, Louisiana. Ehart described the studio as way out in the bayous. Earl Lon Price played saxophone on the first track. Livgren said it paired very progressive material with songs that leaned toward pop, and "It Takes a Woman's Love (To Make a Man)" was written to satisfy Kirshner's demand for a hit.
It reached number 70 and was certified gold in December 1977. The release date is September on the album's page and October on the band's. AllMusic's Bret Adams gave it three and a half stars and singled out "Two Cents Worth", "Icarus" and "Mysteries and Mayhem", while the Rolling Stone Album Guide gave it one star.
