Leftoverture was recorded between December 1975 and August 1976 at Studio in the Country and produced by Glixman with the band; George Marino mastered it at Sterling Sound. The title combines leftover and overture. Walsh had writer's block and co-wrote only three songs, so Livgren wrote most of it. "Carry On Wayward Son" was written as a sequel to "The Pinnacle" from Masque. Children's voices on "Cheyenne Anthem" are those of Toye LaRocca and Cheryl Norman.
It reached number five in the United States and number two in Canada. Rolling Stone said it warrants Kansas a spot right alongside Boston and Styx, while Christgau gave it a D+.
