Point of Know Return was recorded in June and July 1977 at Studio in the Country in Bogalusa and at Woodland Sound Studios in Nashville, where most of the sessions moved after equipment failure. Glixman produced. Walsh left briefly during the recording and later admitted he had been difficult. It reached number four in the United States in January 1978 and number seven in Canada, and is certified four times platinum.
Rolling Stone was mixed and called the lyrics a wan and ridiculous rehash of the bargain-basement exoticism employed by the British art-rock crowd, while AllMusic's Robert Taylor called it essential.
