Young is on about half the record. Graham Nash said he mostly recorded his parts alone in Los Angeles while the others added theirs later. Helpless was cut in San Francisco in November 1969 with Stephen Stills on piano and Young singing live. The album went to number one in the US, Canada, the Netherlands and Australia and to five in Britain. Langdon Winner in Rolling Stone found it too sweet and too perfect, but picked out Helpless among its strongest songs.
