Someday and Crime in the City were cut first, in July 1988. An early sequence called Times Square was shelved, and an EP, Eldorado, came out only in Japan and Australia. Rockin' in the Free World and No More were added in March 1989. The album opens with a solo acoustic Rockin' recorded live at Jones Beach and closes with the electric band version. Linda Ronstadt sings on two tracks. David Fricke gave it five stars in Rolling Stone, and AllMusic called it the album fans knew he could make.
