Blank Project was recorded and mixed in five days in Woodstock, New York, with Kieran Hebden of Four Tet producing and the duo RocketNumberNine playing all the instruments. Cherry wrote the material with Cameron McVey as a way of mourning her mother, who died in 2009, and Paul Simm co-wrote six of the tracks. Robyn sings on Out of the Black. The sound is sparse, built from loose drums and a few synthesizers around her voice.

Miles Raymer of Pitchfork heard Across the Water as Cherry singing over an austere drum arrangement with no melodic accompaniment, and described Spit Three Times as a woozy, paranoid slow-grinding trip-hop beat. NPR called the record stark and urgent, and The Guardian called it bold and adventurous. Robert Christgau gave it a one-star honorable mention in Vice, naming Out of the Black and Spit Three Times. A bonus disc sold through Rough Trade and Piccadilly Records collected remixes by Villalobos and Loderbauer, Joe Goddard and Bouvet.
