Broken Politics was recorded at the Creative Music Studio in Woodstock, which Don Cherry had used and Karl Berger founded. Berger plays vibraphone on Synchronised Devotion. The album uses samples from Ornette Coleman recordings, and Natural Skin Deep samples Coleman's Growing Up. Kong samples The Is the Hardest Version by King Tubby and the Aggrovators, and Robert Del Naja of Massive Attack co-produced it. Some lyrics came from her time in Sierra Leone, where she arranged the funeral of her father, Ahmadu Jah.

Apart from Berger's vibraphone and city sounds recorded on Cherry's phone, all the music came from Hebden's laptop. Hebden said he made the whole thing in the computer. Cherry described the theme as feeling broken, disappointed and sad, but having perseverance. Kong was the lead single in August 2018, followed by Shot Gun Shack. Wolfgang Tillmans made the front cover artwork.

Laura Snapes of The Guardian gave the record five stars, and Metacritic scored it 81. Alfred Soto of Pitchfork found it uneven but named Natural Skin Deep the strongest track and said Slow Release turns Cherry into a high, yearning wind instrument. She toured North America, Australia and Europe in late 2018 and early 2019.
