Homebrew was recorded at Cherry Bear Studios in London and on the Cherry Bear Mobile, with Sassy also recorded at Grapehouse in Copenhagen and Trout at Power Play in New York. Gang Starr produced and co-wrote Sassy and I Ain't Gone Under Yet, with Guru on vocals for Sassy. Geoff Barrow wrote and produced Somedays, and Michael Stipe sang on Trout and is credited as its producer. Jean-Baptiste Mondino took the photography.
Trout combines a guitar riff Jonny Dollar replayed from Steppenwolf's version of The Pusher with the drums John Bonham played on Led Zeppelin's When the Levee Breaks. It was never a single, but it reached No. 2 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart in January 1993. Red Paint retells a true story Cherry heard from her mother, Moki Cherry, and the disc credits it as inspired by her. Move with Me appeared on the soundtrack of the 1993 film Sliver, and a dub version was on the soundtrack of Wim Wenders' Until the End of the World.
Money Love and Buddy X were the worldwide singles, and Buddy X became her third top 50 hit in the United States. Its 1993 remix featured The Notorious B.I.G., and a 1999 UK garage remix by the Dreem Teem, billed as Dreem Teem vs Neneh Cherry, reached No. 15 in the UK.
Mark Coleman of Rolling Stone said it supplied the opposite effect to the debut's conceptual sound, and Greg Kot of the Chicago Tribune wrote that her music defies categorization. Alex Henderson of AllMusic called it as magnificent and risk-taking as Raw Like Sushi. Ian McCann of NME gave it 7 out of 10 and heard the best demos you ever heard.
