Movement was released by Factory as FACT 50 on November 13, 1981 and runs 35:20. It was written over roughly seven months. Gillian Gilbert joined in October 1980, and the producer Martin Hannett's relationship with the band had deteriorated to the point that he walked out during the production of Everything's Gone Green. The sleeve is by Peter Saville, after a poster by Fortunato Depero, with blue lines forming an F and an L for Factory and FACT 50. ICB, per Peter Hook in 2013, stands for Ian Curtis Buried.

The album reached number 30 in the UK, number 1 on the UK Independent chart and number 8 in New Zealand. Reception at the time was tepid after the Ceremony single, and the band reportedly considered remixing it. Retrospectively, Pitchfork's Tom Ewing in 2008 called it their most coherent and underappreciated record, and Uncut praised its opener; Wikipedia lists Pitchfork at 9.3, AllMusic at 3.5 of 5, Uncut at 8 of 10 and Blender at 5 of 5. Reissues came in 2008, in a Definitive Edition on April 5, 2019, and on December 5, 2025 with a Steven Wilson Dolby Atmos mix.
