Sean Slade and Paul Q. Kolderie produced the album, with Chris Hufford on tracks 10 and 11, and it was recorded in about three weeks in 1992. The singles were Creep, Anyone Can Play Guitar on February 1, 1993 and Stop Whispering on October 5, 1993. It reached number 22 on the UK chart (the Wikipedia text says 25 in one place and 22 in the table) and number 32 on the Billboard 200, and is two times platinum in the UK and platinum in the US.
Q wrote that British teenagerhood has never been grumpier; Pitchfork in 2007 said the band stumbled over grunge's coattails and had been apologizing for it ever since. The album's success nearly broke the band apart, and the money and freedom it brought paid for The Bends in 1995.
