Tarantula came out in March 1996, shortly after the split, and Creation deleted it a week later. It is the only Ride album on which Bell sings more than Gardener, who took the lead on just two songs of the original tracklist and one bonus track. Bell wrote most of it, and Castle on the Hill is his lament for the band's situation, with references to Gardener's self-imposed exile. The single Black Nite Crash came out on 12 February 1996 and was made single of the week by Melody Maker.
It reached 21 in Britain and 26 in Scotland. AllMusic gave it one and a half stars, Pitchfork 5.4 and NME 6 out of 10, while Rolling Stone thought it rawer and harder rocking than anything else Ride had recorded. In 2023 it reached 9 on the UK independent chart.
