The album was recorded between October 2018 and March 2019 and announced on 23 April 2019, the day Future Love came out as the first single. After seeing an exhibition in 2018, Bell was drawn to the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat, who used three slashes taken from the hobo graffiti that marked an unsafe place. The symbol shaped the title and the cover, and Basquiat is named in the lyrics of Repetition. Bell also cited Sonic Youth, the Fall and post-punk, including Siouxsie and the Banshees and Public Image Ltd.

It reached 7 in Britain, 1 on the UK independent chart, 6 in Scotland and 72 in Germany. Pitchfork's Ben Cardew heard a band that had stopped worrying what people thought, starting with the voice that says the band name 16 seconds into R.I.D.E., and compared Kill Switch to Swervedriver and Repetition to the Human League. Metacritic scored it 70, NME gave it four stars out of five and Uncut 7 out of 10.
