Alright came out on 3 July 1995 on Parlophone as a double A-side with Time. It reached number two in the UK, stayed in the top three for a month, and also reached eight in Ireland and thirty in France. It featured on the Clueless soundtrack and won the 1996 Ivor Novello Award for Best Contemporary Song. The video, directed by Dom and Nic at Portmeirion in North Wales, shows the band on bicycles and a wheeled bed and borrows from the television series The Prisoner.
Sam Williams had heard a demo built on a badly out-of-tune piano at Goffey's cottage. At Sawmills it was cut in about ten minutes, two takes edited together, with piano and other parts added afterward. To get the pub piano sound, Williams and John Cornfield detuned two of the three strings of each note, going sharp and flat on either side of a string left at pitch. Quinn made up the line about keeping teeth nice and clean, and thought it felt like a toothpaste advert. Coombes said it was not written as an anthem, and that the "We are young" lines were about thirteen or fourteen year olds discovering girls and drinking. Goffey said it was written in a cottage with broken heating. Quinn later called its success a creative millstone, and in 1999 Coombes joked that the band should play it in a minor key and in the past tense.
NME's Steve Sutherland compared it to Satisfaction and My Generation. In 2010 the American rapper Travie McCoy sampled it in "We'll Be Alright". At the 2020 reunion show in Glasgow, The Guardian's Malcolm Jack noted that Coombes fluffed the lyrics and called the song a quintessential Britpop anthem.
