Sun Hits the Sky was released in June 1997 and reached number ten on the UK singles chart. It was recorded at Sawmills and produced and mixed by Supergrass with John Cornfield, with Satin Singh on percussion. The track appears to end with a snippet of another unreleased song that plays until fade-out. The B-side, Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others, is the band's cover of the 1986 Smiths song, and the CD single also carried a Radio 1 Evening Session version of the song itself.
In his 2020 review of the Glasgow reunion show, The Guardian's Malcolm Jack singled out Rob Coombes's synth solo, which he said invoked the merry psychedelia of early Pink Floyd.
