Richard III was the second single from In It for the Money, released in March 1997. It reached number two in the UK on 6 April, matching Alright. The title comes from the band's habit of giving working titles the names of people. It was the third song called Richard, and they liked how the king and Shakespeare's play suited the menacing tone, though neither is mentioned in the lyrics. Sam Williams plays theremin, and the track was produced and mixed by Supergrass and John Cornfield at Sawmills.
The video, by Nic and Dom, places the band in a basement covered in Fuller's earth. Pitchfork called it a "rampaging single". The Guardian's Malcolm Jack wrote in 2020 that its riff makes the case for Coombes as an under-heralded guitar hero. Liam Howlett of the Prodigy called it "a top punk tune".
