Released on 19 July 1985, it was the band's ninth chart single in Britain, reaching number 15, and their first to enter the US Hot 100, where it peaked at 99. Tim Pope's video was filmed at Fulham Studios in London on 18 June 1985, with the band playing and Smith and Porl Thompson each handling a camera on cables. Smith has said it is one of his favourite Cure videos because it shows the band as they are.
Spin's John Leland heard the bittersweet feel of a New Order record. Billboard ranked it third and Mojo second among the band's greatest songs, and the Guardian placed it second in 2024, calling it musically a jubilant rush and lyrically despondent. Superchunk covered it for The A.V. Club's A.V. Undercover series.
