Written during sessions in southern France and finished at Studio Miraval, it was helped by Boris Williams, who sped up the tempo and added the opening drum fill. An instrumental version served as the theme of the French television show Les Enfants du Rock. Smith described it as being about hyperventilating, kissing and fainting to the floor, and said it was inspired by a trip to Beachy Head with Mary Poole. It reached number 29 in Britain and, at 40, was the band's first US Top 40 single. Smith called it the best pop song the Cure have ever done.
Rolling Stone ranked it 483rd on its 500 Greatest Songs in 2004 and 108th in 2021, and Billboard made it the best Cure song in 2019. The Guardian ranked it sixth in 2024 and called it the jewel of Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, with cascading guitar lines and a breezy melody, giddy with love. Robert Christgau picked it as the song on the album whose romantic vagaries had universal potential.
