Released on 10 April 1989, it reached number five in Britain, the only Cure single to reach the top five there. It also reached number three in Ireland and West Germany. In North America it was a later single after Fascination Street, and reached 74 on the Hot 100 and 23 on the Modern Rock chart. Smith produced it with David M. Allen.
Fans have read the lyric as being about addiction, depression or abuse. Smith has given several explanations, including childhood nightmares and the disturbing songs his father sang to him. Tim Pope, who directed the video, reads it as an allegory for Smith's drug-addled past. In the video, shot on a London sound stage, Smith plays both the cannibalistic spiderman and its victim and is swallowed by a giant spider. It won British Video of the Year at the 1990 Brit Awards. AllMusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine called the song eerie and string-laced.
