- Disintegration
The third single from Disintegration, released on 21 August 1989, reached number two on the US Hot 100, the band's only Top 10 there, and number 18 in Britain. Smith wrote it as a wedding present for Mary Poole, and said it was an open show of emotion that had taken him ten years to feel comfortable singing. It is in A minor and driven by a bass riff. The album version runs 3:30 and the seven-inch 3:24, and the title is spelled both Lovesong and Love Song on different releases.
It is in 603 setlists on setlist.fm. The Guardian ranked it tenth in 2024 and noted its odd afterlife in covers by everyone from Adele to the hard rock band Jack Off Jill. It added that at a Hollywood show in 2023 Smith turned away from the audience and sang it to his wife, who was seated in the wings. Pitchfork's Nitsuh Abebe wrote that it keeps promising I will always love you like a grave, solemn commitment rather than a giddy one.
