Bingo Bango was the fourth single from Remedy, released by XL in 2000. It samples Merengue by Bolivar, which is why Jose Ibata and Rolando Ibata are credited as writers. It draws on samba, calypso, house and techno, and Rolling Stone's Barry Walters heard ska layered on salsa. It was their third number 1 on the US Dance Club Play chart, after Red Alert and Rendez-Vu, topping it for two weeks in 2000, and it reached number 13 in the UK. AllMusic's John Bush wrote that it shared with Rendez-Vu the Nuyoricans' penchant for Latin vibes. NME was scathing, and The Observer's Alice Fisher called it riotous.
The duo directed the video themselves. The song turned up in the American Queer as Folk, in The Dancer (2000), Get Over It (2001) and Extreme Ops (2002), and often under televised sport. Buxton told The Independent that he watched football and heard it played alongside the commentary, and felt very proud.
Live and covers
Basement Jaxx usually ended their live shows with it. At Creamfields in 2000 they brought on a troupe of feathered Mardi Gras dancers. In 2011 Buxton and Jules Buckley arranged it as a Viennese waltz for the Metropole Orkest, a 60-piece orchestra with a 20-voice choir, and the Netherlands concert became the live album Basement Jaxx vs. Metropole Orkest. Hot 8 Brass Band covered it on The Life & Times Of... in 2012.
