Red Alert came out on XL on 19 April 1999 as the first single from Remedy. Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe wrote it, Blue James sang it, and it samples Far Beyond by Locksmith, so the credits also name Harvey Mason, Tyrone Brown, John Blake Jr., Leonard Gibbs, James Simmons, Richard Steacker and Millard Vinson. It reached number 5 on the UK Singles Chart, number 1 on the UK dance and independent charts, and number 1 on the US Billboard Dance Club Play chart, their first there. It was certified platinum in the UK in 2023.
Billboard's Craig Roseberry cited Parliament and Funkadelic as inspirations. NME's Stevie Chick described a P-Funk groove with dirty basslines, sirens and synths. Rolling Stone quoted the line in which a diva tells us nothing is going on but history. Pitchfork put it at number 69 on its list of the top 200 songs of the 1990s, and Rolling Stone ranked it number 80 on its 2022 list of the 200 greatest dance songs.
There were two videos. The UK one, directed by Dawn Shadforth, is set in a greasy spoon cafe where androids bring down a meteor and customers turn into rave zombies. The US one, shot in New York and directed by Brian Beletic, shows the NYPD busting people who own musical instruments, with Moby among those arrested.
Live
The duo told the Guardian in 2012 that the track they always play to rescue a dancefloor is a remix of Red Alert by Analog People In A Digital World.
