Credited to Jah Wobble's Invaders of the Heart, it reached number 13 on the UK Albums Chart and number 160 on the ARIA chart, and Wobble toured Britain to support it. The first single was "Becoming More Like God". He used twelve guest vocalists: Dolores O'Riordan on "The Sun Does Rise", Abdel Ali Slimani on the rai song "I'm an Algerian", Natacha Atlas on the three songs she co-wrote, and Baaba Maal on "Angels". Gavin Friday and Najma Akhtar also sing, and Justin Adams plays guitar on most tracks.
The Guardian said Wobble sensibly lets a prodigious list of guests lead the line, and The Independent said it is the rhythms that count. Wobble considered 1998's Umbra Sumus a sequel. Cherry Red reissued it in 2011 as a two-disc set with 16 extra tracks, and Uncut placed it 301st on its 2024 list of the greatest albums of the 1990s.
