Screws was played, recorded and finished at Durton Studio in August 2012, according to the sleeve note. It was made while Frahm recovered from a thumb injury and was first offered to fans as a free download on his birthday. The CD followed on Erased Tapes on 7 December 2012.
Philip Sherburne of Pitchfork later described it as nine songs for nine fingers. Torsten Posselt designed the artwork, and a 2015 remix album, Screws Reworked, followed.
