The Bells was first released in 2009 on the Swedish label Kning Disk and reached a wider audience in 2010 through Erased Tapes. It was recorded over two days in the Grunewald Church in Berlin, with Peter Broderick credited for musical direction.

Metacritic gives it 75 from six reviews. Spencer Grady of BBC Music felt the church's natural reverb gave the pieces their organic energy, while Ben Hogwood of MusicOMH gave three stars and Pitchfork's Brian Howe scored it 4.8 out of 10. Two of its pieces, Said and Done and Over There, It's Raining, reappear in new versions on Spaces.
