Solo is an improvised single take with no overdubs, later recorded on the Modell 370, a 370 cm high vertical piano also made by David Klavins. Frahm gave the album away free on Twitter. The Erased Tapes CD came in a card slipcase with a booklet containing three pages of text in braille. It was one of 19 records nominated for the IMPALA Album of the Year Award.

Mark Richardson of Pitchfork scored it 7.3, finding it spare, lyrical and quiet, and compared its best moments to Harold Budd. He singled out Merry for the grit of a creaky piano and thought Wall derailed the gentle mood. Frahm recorded it with Matthias H. Franz Hahn and mixed and mastered it himself.
