Finn wrote it for Temple of Low Men, and Capitol issued it as a single in June 1988. It reached number two in Australia and New Zealand, number one on Canada's The Record chart and number 42 on the US Billboard Hot 100. APRA members voted it the 33rd best New Zealand song of the 20th century in 2001, and in 2025 it placed 38th in the Triple J Hottest 100 of Australian Songs. The single's B-side was Kill Eye, and the 12-inch and CD added a live Don't Dream It's Over recorded at the Roxy in Los Angeles on 26 February 1987.

In Smash Hits in 1988, Seymour said the song is about being home, and that he played double bass in the clip because it looked better.

Live and covers

The band played it at the 1996 farewell, as an encore at Live Earth in Sydney, and at Glastonbury in 2022. At the 2005 ARIA Awards, Finn performed it solo as a memorial to Paul Hester while a montage of Hester's life played. The McCarters took it to number 73 on the Billboard country chart in 1990, George Canyon reached number 87 on the Canadian Hot 100 with it in January 2011, and Budjerah and WILSN recorded it in June 2023 for the 50th anniversary of Mushroom Records.
