Neil Finn wrote it in his flat in St Kilda East, Melbourne. The title is a common Melbourne phrase for the city's changeable weather. Finn explained that he and Tim were riding emotional roller coasters a lot of the time, so it described the many moods of the two of them together and apart. It was first meant for their Finn Brothers album and moved to Woodface when the projects merged. As a single in June 1992 it reached number 26 in Britain, 47 in Australia and 68 in Canada, and it was not released in the United States.
Kerry Brown directed the first Crowded House video made in New Zealand, using beaches and bush on the West Coast, the plains of Central Otago and the Victorian buildings of Oamaru, with the psychedelic effects inspired by Salvador Dali. APRA members voted the song the 84th best New Zealand song of the 20th century in 2001. After Hester died, the Finn Brothers played it in his honour. Sally Seltmann, as New Buffalo, covered it as Four Seasons on the 2005 tribute album She Will Have Her Way.
