Neil Finn has said that the brothers wrote the song on the first day they got together, when Tim arrived with the title, the chorus line and the opening line. They found the guitar riff and finished the song that day. It was meant for the Finn Brothers' planned 1990 debut, before Capitol's interest sent the recordings onto Woodface. The address 57 Mount Pleasant Street is made up, Finn said, though his sister once lived on Mount Pleasant Road in Auckland. He said the theme is that you create your own weather.

Released in February 1992, it was the most successful single from the album, reaching the top 50 in ten countries and number seven in Britain. It won Most Performed Australian Work Overseas at the 1994 APRA Awards, and APRA members voted it the 16th best New Zealand song of all time in 2001. In 2025 it placed 69th in the Triple J Hottest 100 of Australian Songs. Peter Paphides wrote that Finn could "make it seem like a postcard from a dream."

MacGregor Knox directed the video after Tim Finn had left. It shows Neil Finn, Hester and Seymour at beaches on the Bellarine Peninsula, among them Queenscliff and Portarlington, with a Fiat 600 Multipla towing a caravanette and a Ford Thunderbird convertible.
