A remix reached number 26 on the US Modern Rock Tracks chart in March 1994. Curtis Wehrfritz, a Canadian director and artist, directed the video. Larry Flick of Billboard wrote in 1993 that Finn "works his usual melodic miracles here."
A live version recorded at the Hammersmith Apollo in London on 12 November 1993 is on the Locked Out single. setlist.fm lists 458 performances. Brooke Fraser covered it on the 2005 tribute album She Will Have Her Way, changing the key and leaving out the line about a Christian fearing vengeance from above. When Uncut reviewed Gravity Stairs in 2024, it called All That I Can Ever Own a close cousin of Distant Sun.
