Chris Bourke writes that it was the first song Finn wrote specifically for Crowded House. Froom and Finn reworked parts of it, which is why Froom shares the writing credit. It came out in April 1987 as the album's fifth and last single. It reached number 18 in Australia on the Australian Music Report, number three in New Zealand and number seven on the US Billboard Hot 100. The video has the band playing in a barn with a classic American car parked outside. Bourke's 1997 history of the band, Crowded House: Something So Strong, takes its name from it.

The B-side on the standard 7-inch was I Walk Away, and the UK 12-inch carried a live recording made at the Trocadero in Philadelphia on 24 March 1987 for the King Biscuit Flower Hour. In May 2020 the band put out a lockdown performance of the song, and it appeared on the 2011 Flood Relief compilation for victims of the Queensland floods.
