Murphy wrote Call the Police shortly after Donald Trump's inauguration, watching the protests and the online right's sneers at snowflakes; he told Dazed that those were his people and nobody got to take shots at them. Musically it is a long, driving rock song that critics compared to Bowie, U2 and New Order's Procession. Murphy plays drums, bass, guitar and synths, with Al Doyle on guitar, and Dave Sardy mixed it.
It was released with American Dream as a double A-side on 5 May 2017, going live at midnight in each time zone; the upload in the hypersongs web is the VEVO video posted at that moment. The New York Times called it a quietly ambitious protest song, and Rolling Stone listed it among the best songs of 2017. The band played it on Saturday Night Live the next day, after debuting it at Brooklyn Steel in April with the audience asked not to film.
