Someone Great grew out of an instrumental passage in 45:33 and became the fourth track on Sound of Silver: a bright, burbling synthesizer pattern and a steady beat under a lyric about the morning after someone is gone, and the strange ordinariness of the day that follows. The album is dedicated to Dr. George Kamen, reputed to have been Murphy's therapist, and many listeners take the song as grief for him; others hear a break-up. Murphy has declined to say, telling The Quietus in 2010 that it was unnecessary because it was personal.

It was released as a single in October 2007 with a video by the artist Doug Aitken, in which a woman blacked out in silhouette moves through a New York summer, a record store and a rooftop party; the upload in the hypersongs web is that 3:50 video edit. Pitchfork put it among the top ten tracks of 2007. Kid Cudi sampled it for Can I Be, and a 2019 Netflix film took its title from it, though its director could not clear any LCD songs for the soundtrack. setlist.fm logs around 470 performances, sixth among their songs.
