American Dream begins with a slow, steady pulse and Murphy waking from a bad dream; Spin and others heard it as a reply to Suicide's Dream Baby Dream, a song Murphy had chosen as a guest DJ in 2011. Murphy wrote it alone and mixed it himself. In 2018 Lovefingers remixed it for a DFA 12-inch.
The upload in the hypersongs web is the official video, a six-minute film directed by Rian Johnson and shot over two days on a farm north of Santa Clarita, in which Sissy Spacek and David Strathairn play an elderly couple of scientists building a teleporter in their garage. Murphy said he wanted it to work as a video for the song and the song to work as a soundtrack for the film. It has opened many of their shows since 2017.
