Written with Al Doyle, I Used To rides a relentless rock beat and melancholy synthesizers, with Murphy singing in a voice the A.V. Club likened to Robert Smith's. Resident Advisor heard it as a return to the themes of time passing and irrelevance from Losing My Edge, delivered as that song's opposite: no boasting, only loss. Dixon's Retouch remix came out on a DFA 12-inch in 2018. It was played in concert from 2017 to 2018 and recorded for Electric Lady Sessions.
