Gary Paczosa recorded and mixed it, Neal Cappellino recorded the vocals, strings and piano, Brad Blackwood mastered it, and Buddy Cannon co-produced two tracks, One Ray of Shine and Richmond on the James. Russell Moore, formerly of IIIrd Tyme Out, sings lead and baritone. Tyminski stepped back from touring but still plays guitar and mandolin on the record. In The Guardian, Kitty Empire wrote that Richmond on the James records the dying words of a civil war soldier, and Granite Mills, which Moore sings, is about the 1874 deaths of women and children locked into a burning factory. The Hangman adapts a 1951 poem by Maurice Ogden, and Krauss was drawn to Looks Like the End of the Road, by Jeremy Lister, during the pandemic.

Mojo gave it four stars and PopMatters nine out of ten. It reached number one on the Top Bluegrass Albums chart and on the UK country albums chart, and scored 84 on Metacritic.
