It came out in August 2001, eight months after the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack, in which Krauss had a part. Gary Paczosa recorded and mixed it. Robert Lee Castleman wrote Let Me Touch You for Awhile and The Lucky One, Jerry Douglas wrote Choctaw Hayride, Ron Block wrote It All Comes Down to You, and the covers include Dan Fogelberg's Stars and the title song by David Rawlings and Gillian Welch. Larry Atamanuik plays drums and percussion on some tracks. After the title song a short outtake from the sessions is hidden at the end of the disc.

At the 44th Grammys it won Best Bluegrass Album, and The Lucky One won Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and Best Country Song. It reached number 35 on the Billboard 200 and number 3 on the country albums chart, and was certified gold. The tour for it was delayed after the attacks of September 11, 2001, opening in Savannah, Georgia on 28 September instead of in Cincinnati on 12 September.
