Rounder and Concord released it in the US and Warner Music elsewhere. Pitchfork reported that Calexico's Quattro (World Drifts In), which opens the album, was the song that ignited Krauss's wish for a second duo record. The Guardian noted that Krauss brought in Lucinda Williams's Can't Let Go, and that new in the mix are Bert Jansch's It Don't Bother Me and Anne Briggs's Go Your Way. Burnett and Plant wrote High and Lonesome, which Pitchfork called the zenith of the album.
The band includes Bill Frisell, David Hidalgo, Marc Ribot, Colin Linden, Buddy Miller, Russ Pahl, Stuart Duncan, Dennis Crouch, Viktor Krauss and Jay Bellerose, with Williams singing background vocals. Michael Piersante recorded and mixed it. The album reached number 7 on the Billboard 200 and number 3 on the country albums chart, scored 83 on Metacritic, and was nominated for three Grammys at the 65th ceremony: Best Americana Album, Best American Roots Song for High and Lonesome, and Best Country Duo/Group Performance for Going Where the Lonely Go. The Guardian called it "a dose of musical reassurance".
