Dance Yrself Clean opens This Is Happening at 8:56. The BBC's Chris Power described it as opening with a naive vocal melody accompanied by 8-bit curlicues, before bursting into a gigantic breakbeat-driven block-rocker.
Kid Cudi sampled it for All Talk. Beats per Minute, Consequence, Paste, PopMatters, Spectrum Culture and the Pazz & Jop poll counted it among the best songs of 2010, and Paste named it the best song of the 2010s. Billboard staff ranked it the eighth greatest dance song of the decade in 2019, and Time Out in 2016 counted it among the best songs of all time. It opens The Long Goodbye. Home, the album's last song, folds parts of it back on itself.
