Losing My Edge came out in July 2002 on DFA as a 12-inch with Beat Connection (Extended Disco Dub) on the other side. It later opened the second disc of the debut album. It peaked at 115 on the UK singles chart. The rhythm resembles Killing Joke's Change, and Tim Goldsworthy admitted the track was a rip-off of Killing Joke.

Murphy told ireallylovemusic that the song came from his time as a DJ playing Can, Liquid Liquid, ESG and the like: he had become kind of cool for a moment, and he was afraid that the new-found coolness was going to go away.

Pitchfork placed it thirteenth on its list of the top songs of the 2000s, NME placed it fortieth among the best tracks of the past 15 years in 2011, and Rolling Stone put it at 77 on its 2018 list of the best songs of the century so far. Live, it was part of the 2005 shows such as the one at Molotow on 20 February 2005, and it appears on The Long Goodbye.
